Back o the Shop Art Gallery and Cafe

In 2007 in the village of Terrington where I grew up my family and I opened up the Back o’ the Shop Gallery after the closure of the post office that my parents Ian and Kate ran, I now work with local artists managing the space and programming exhibitions and events:

From the press:

"Situated in a former storeroom at the back of his store and post office in Terrington, the concept for the gallery grew from Ian’s love of contemporary art, plus an awareness that his daughter, Shelley Hughes, and her friends found it hard to find local galleries to exhibit their work when they graduated. There is just one stipulation for artists who wish to show their work in the Back o’ the Shop gallery, they have to be from Yorkshire, or at least have a Yorkshire connection. The gallery ethos is to provide a platform, free of charge, for new, emerging and established artists in the county.
They hold 10 exhibitions per year with a specific jewellery and ceramics show in November and December. The Back o’ the Shop is a unique exhibition space aiming to enrich the cultural diversity of the area making contemporary art accessible to the community.
